Has anyone done RPG before? How do you come up with a good character?

I haven't done any role playing. Well, except in sales training, but that's not very fun. Interesting...

Has anyone done RPG before? How do you come up with a good character? Not this sort of forum RPG. Back in the day, I played on MUDs/MUSHes, but they were realtime, so you had conversations line-by-line, not in large blocks of description. (More like this: alumnus.caltech.edu/~chrisber/Mudding/mud.una.duel.html) How do you come up with a good character? Mostly in play, I've discovered. You work things out as you go along (of course, you need a sort of basic idea to start with, but the details evolve). And if you end up not liking your character, you can retire him/her and start a new one!

So I am becoming obsessed with the idea of doing this. You may all find yourselves bombarded with Regency questions regarding characters.

They have some useful links on the RPG site as well (or so they say--I must admit, I haven't actually checked). I don't think they're necessarily sticklers for historical accuracy, given the modern colloquialisms some of them use, but they do attempt it, and I really appreciate that. Having you there will certainly add to the effect of authenticity, should you choose to join. I shouldn't be as comfortable as I am with the idea of an RPG eating my real life this summer. But it's Regency, so how can I refuse? At least I can pretend it's all in the interest of education. *cough*
Although my characters are both very different from me, I created them using parts of my own personality as well as attributes of pre-existing literary figures (Lucy Pevensie for Sukey, for instance, after I decided on Rachael Henley to play her). Once you have a basic idea of who a character is, he or she writes him or herself to some degree.

I think RPG sounds like fun. My character would be a francophone... and she'd have a heavy accent and would be just like me; silly and irreverent... Hee

I am pretty sure that I have a good idea of my character now. I'd like to do 2 or 3, but I can't decide on a male character. I am not sure if he should be related to my female character or not.

I did it! I signed up and submitted a character for approval. I am the Viscountess Brenchley. Now if I can only figure out how to actually play.

Oh, I love your application, Cosmo! This is going to be fantastic! I'm sure it won't take long for your character to be approved. I certainly hope not, because I can't wait to see your first posts! :-)

My friends and I actually already have a Regency RPG set up.. as of late we haven't had much time to develop it more but it is highly entertaining. We wrote to each other as the characters we created. I have some of the stories I wrote for my character up on my MSN groups.. If anyone is interested in reading the first RPG story that is up on there... here is the link groups.msn.com/TheRegencySocietyLady Elizabeth

I am really having fun in the London Life Game that Amy and I are in. I have three characters now and it takes up way too much of my time. There is going to be a ball at ALmacks "tonight" and I can't wait to see what is going to happen. z9.invisionfree.com/thelondonlife/index.php?act=idx
