I remember reading a Mary Balogh novel, More than a Mistress... and I found it rather disappointing. As was Jo Beverley and Mary Jo Putney. There was just something unrealistic in the plotlines and the characters -- especially when convenient marriages are consummated BEFORE the wedding! They don't even like each other! I actually found Patricia Veryan to be a far second to Heyer. Rather than a simple kiss being the most action you'll see, Veryan adds a little make out scene, but that's it. And her writing is pretty darn good! She also has series, in which villains may reform in the next novel. Yum. I'm curious about Laura Kinsale and Elizabeth Rolls, though. Another great list, it's a LOT longer, and has a lot of titles and reviewed books there... you can even search for books according to your favorite plot line (convenient marraiges, and May-December romances for moi) is on www.thenonesuch.com However, it's a tad outdated.

Mary Balogh has turned out to be my new favorite author! Picked up a book of hers ("At Last Comes Marriage") at a grocery store, I think, when it was first released, then got the rest of the books in the series from a friend. I like her realistic chracters with realistic problems. Great humor and settings as well. I think my favorite so far has been "Lord Carew's Bride" (re-printed and re-released last year). Stephanie Laurens I know I've read, but I can't remember any titles at the moment. Pretty sure I like her though, it's a name I know. Catherine Coulter used to be my favorite author about 10-15 years ago, with books like the Sherbrooke Bride series and other regency-era trilogies and series, but I read so much that the books got boring as I was so used to her writing style and brand of humor and characters that they all seemed the same after a while. (still like her comtemporary FBI thrillers, though)
If I think of it, I'll look through the books I've read in the last year and recommend my favorites!

One series I enjoyed was the "Rarest Blooms" quartet by Madeline Hunter. The last ("Dangerous in Diamonds") was definitely the best, and #3, "Sinful in Satin" was not as good as the others, but overall, the seres was good. I like series, since you spend so much time getting to know the characters.

I am a HUGE fan of Stephanie Laurens. It was actually her book, "Devil's Bride" that introduced me into the world of modern romance novels. Before that, literally all I read were classic novels. I am a huge fan of both Devil and Honoria. As for Mary Balogh, I am more a fan of her earlier Bedwyn series, with Slightly Scandalous being my favorite. Freyja and Joshua are fantastic together. As for Julia Quinn, I enjoyed her Bridgerton series. Colin is my favorite. I have not read anything else on your list however.

I am addicted to Georgette Heyer's Regency Novels. I can recommend them for humor, brillant dialogues and historical correctness.
For getting to know them, start with
- The Grand Sophy - Arabella - The Talisman Ring
