Greetings to everyone here. It is so exciting to be amongst others who love history and in particular the clothing of those periods.
My desire in joining all of you here is to participate in your very pleasant society and to learn from those of you who have begun attiring yourselves in period dress.
By way of introduction let me say that I am the wife of a wonderfully considerate and indulgent husband who supports most of my eccentric whims. I am also the fortunate mother of 3 terribly handsome boys of 9, 5 and 3. As a family we have not been able to exercise our interests much - we have been learning the fine details of living with autism. However, the boys are getting just old enough and we are getting better at coping with their challenges, so I can pursue my interests.
I recently made the decision to start dressing in the manner of my whim and desire. I feel I must share what prompted this.
I was shopping for groceries and during my errands I had to shop at 4 different stores. In the course of that shopping day, an ordinary weekday in Portland, Oregon, I observed 3 young women in full "goth" dress; 2 older women in long skirts with aprons; a gentleman dressed in the style of the old bard; a group of musicians dressed in Renaissance attire; 2 families in what appeared to be Amish attire and a group of little girls playing in the parking lot in dresses with bloomers. I realized that I typically leave the house dressed comfortably but not at all in the feminine styles I prefer and that I couldn't stand out anymore than any of these fine folks, if I did.
I'm not intending to try to grocery shop in huge hoopskirts (I might knock down the displays) but I can certainly indulge my desire for the feminine clothing of long ago.
So, I look forward to sharing and learning from all of you and hopefully meeting some of you who are here in the Northwest.
