I have also known this to be referred to as a Banyan, usually worn with a cap as indicated in the article.

I'm a new member, so just browsing subjects. It has been said that men wore banyans on the street, but I'm not sure how firmly that can be documented. However, your gentleman can certainly wear one at home, in the morning. I made my DH a more tailored version which I call a morning gown, cut more like a coat, with a shawl collar and long skirts, which I distinguish from a banyan, which I consider a a T-shaped garment, fairly simple in cut.
