This short story or novella written by Jane Austen when she was 14 has served to help me understand her later canon of work. It's written in an epistolary form; the story unfolds in the course of letters from the older Laura to a young lady, Marianne, telling the latter of the sad love story of the former for didactic purposes. Austen blatantly parodies the conventions of sentimental novels of the time with a hilarious and take-no-prisoners satire that I think really illuminates the rest of her novels. After reading this less-diluted sarcasm, you can easier pick out her attitudes towards her heroines and intentions for reader reactions. It's an interesting read and I would reccommend it to any Austen fan! Happy reading!
